I have been a lifeguard for nearly 9 years now. While I have no children of my own I have taught kids as young as 2 1/2 to swim on their own and have a great deal of experience working with young kids in the water. Arm floats of any kind are not recommended by the American Red Cross or any lifeguard that I have ever known. I have had to rescue several kids who have had the arm floats slip off when they jumped into the pool or were playing in the water.
Also, it is very difficult to have kids make the transition from using arm floats to swimming on their own. The floats cause the child to be vertical in the water; to swim you need to be horizontal. As a lifeguard you can always tell the kids who grew up with arm floats because they are the ones screaming during beginner swimming lessons.
I am surprised that Babies-R-Us is still selling them; most stores no longer do because they are so dangerous. They are not even worth 1 star.
